Company overview

AC Cars began as Auto Carriers Ltd. in 1903, a British manufacturer initially producing cycle cars under the Weller name. Financial difficulties led to several name and ownership changes throughout its history. In 1921, Selwyn Edge acquired the company, rebranding it as AC Cars Ltd. and focusing on racing success with models like the Cobra, initially developed in collaboration with Carroll Shelby. The company produced a range of vehicles including the A.C. Sociable, and later, the AC Cobra, with various engine options. In 1964, a prototype Cobra was tested at Mulsanne Straight, leading to an investigation by the Ministry of Transport. AC continued producing Cobras and other models until 1973, including the Frua-designed AC 428 and AC 429. In the early 1970s, seeking a new direction, AC developed the ME3000 mid-engine prototype, but it was ultimately abandoned due to regulatory changes.
