Company overview

The Chalmers Motor Company began as an American automobile manufacturer in Detroit, Michigan, founded in 1908 by Hugh Chalmers. Initially focused on producing high-end vehicles known for their durability and performance, particularly in touring events, Chalmers achieved peak production in 1911 with 6,250 cars sold. The company faced increasing competition and declining sales in the years following, leading to a merger with Maxwell Motor in 1923. Roy Chapin played a crucial role in Chalmers' early success, initially as treasurer and general manager of Thomas-Detroit. The merger with Maxwell involved a lease agreement that ultimately proved unfavorable for Maxwell's shareholders, and the last Chalmers branded car was produced in 1924. The company’s early models, including the ‘Forty’, ‘30’, and ‘Six’ series, utilized engines from various manufacturers. Chalmers produced a single truck model, the Model 14 Delivery. The company’s operations were temporarily taken over by Maxwell during World War I to support the U.S. Government’s war effort, and ultimately, Maxwell purchased Chalmers' property in 1922.
