Company overview

Hindustan Motors was established in 1942 by B.M. Birla as part of the Birla Technical Services conglomerate. Initially, it manufactured vehicles based on Morris designs, including the Hindustan 10, 122 and 14. From 1957 to 2014, the company produced the Hindustan Ambassador, a popular car derived from the Morris Oxford Series III. In the 1980s, Hindustan Motors held a significant share of the Indian passenger car market before competition from Maruti Udyog shifted the industry landscape. The company has also engaged in joint ventures with General Motors, Isuzu and Mitsubishi to produce trucks and engines. Production of the Ambassador ceased in 2014, and in 2017, Hindustan Motors sold its Chennai plant to PSA Group (now Stellantis) for the rights to the Ambassador brand and associated technology.
