Hongqi is a Chinese luxury car brand owned and operated by FAW Group. Established in 1958, it initially produced vehicles exclusively for high-ranking government officials and party leaders. The brand’s early models, such as the CA72, were based on designs from Chrysler and featured a distinctive fan-inspired grille. Production ceased in 1981, but Hongqi was revived in the mid-1990s, initially by manufacturing foreign models like the Audi 100 and Lincoln Town Car under license. From 2006, FAW began producing its own Hongqi vehicles, starting with the HQ3. Sales initially struggled but increased significantly from 2018 to 2021, reaching over 300,000 units annually. Currently, Hongqi offers a range of vehicles including ultra-luxury sedans (Guoli/L5, Guoya/L1), SUVs (HS3, HS5, HS6, HS7, Tiangong 06/EHS5), and electric models (E-QM5, E-HS9). The brand’s state guest car fleet consists of the L5 and its variants. As of 2023, Hongqi has expanded into international markets including Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Vietnam, Israel, Denmark and Sweden. In 2024, sales exceeded 370,000 units in China.
