Company overview
Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a Swedish manufacturer specializing in high-performance sports cars. Founded in 1994 by Christian von Koenigsegg, the company developed a strategy of vertical integration, creating core systems—engines, transmissions, and software—in-house. Koenigsegg has set multiple world records for production car performance, including the Agera RS with a two-way average top speed of 447 km/h. The company pioneered automotive technologies such as the Freevalve camless engine and Light Speed Transmission (LST). Koenigsegg began production in 2002 with the CC8S and has since produced models including the Jesko, Gemera, and CC850. Initially based in Olofström, production moved to Ängelholm in 2003. The company operates a major factory and R&D complex at a former Swedish Air Force base, employing approximately 850 staff. Koenigsegg initially developed its engines on a Ford Racing V8 block, and later created its own engines from scratch. In 2019, Koenigsegg sold a stake to NEVS and later repurchased it in 2021, regaining full ownership. The company’s history includes an attempted acquisition of Saab in 2009, which ultimately failed. Koenigsegg’s technology includes the FreeValve system, a 9-speed LST transmission, and KDD, a direct drive hybrid powertrain. The Jesko utilizes a 5.0-liter V8 engine with E85 biofuel capability, and the Gemera is a four-seater vehicle featuring KATSAD doors.
