Company overview
MG is a British automotive marque founded in the 1920s by Cecil Kimber. Initially, it began as a sales promotion sideline for Morris Garages in Oxford, producing modified Morris Oxfords and MG Super Sports. In 1930, M.G. Car Company Limited was incorporated, becoming Morris’s personal property until 1935 when it was sold to Morris Motors Limited. Throughout the mid-20th century, MG passed through various ownership structures including British Motor Corporation (BMC), British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC), and Rover Group. Production of MG vehicles ceased in 2005 following the receivership of MG Rover Group, but was revived in 2007 by Nanjing Automobile Group (later SAIC Motor). Since 2007, MG has been manufactured in China under Chinese ownership. In 2023, SAIC Motor controls the marque and MG vehicles are primarily sold internationally. The earliest models were based on Morris chassis, with the 1928 MG 18/80 marking a shift to purpose-designed chassis. The MGB, produced from 1962 to 1980, was a significant success and included variants such as the MGB GT. Later models included badge-engineered versions of Austin Rover vehicles, and in 2006, SAIC Motor acquired the rights to the MG marque. The current most popular model is the MG ZS subcompact SUV, exported extensively from China.
