Company overview

Saab Automobile AB was founded in Sweden in 1945 as part of Saab AB, initially to design a small automobile. The first production model, the Saab 92, debuted in 1949. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Saab expanded its model range with vehicles like the Saab 93, 95, and 96, introducing innovations such as front-wheel drive and the distinctive trapezoidal grille. In 1968, Saab merged with Scania-Vabis, leading to the development of models like the Saab 900 and 9000. In 1989, Saab became an independent company under General Motors and Investor AB. GM’s investment spurred the creation of new models, including the 9-3 and 9-5. However, challenges with sales and a shift in strategy led to the brand’s review in 2008, ultimately resulting in its wind-down. In 2010, Saab was sold to Spyker Cars N.V., but financial difficulties and a lack of investment led to Saab’s bankruptcy in 2011. National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) subsequently acquired Saab’s assets in 2012, restarting production of the 9-3 with a focus on electric vehicles.
