Company overview
The Saturn Corporation, established in 1985 as a subsidiary of General Motors, was an American automobile manufacturer initially intended to compete with Japanese imports. GM launched Saturn as a separate brand, introducing new car models, a dealer network, and manufacturing processes at its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant. Saturn marketed itself as a ‘different kind of car company’ and initially focused on compact vehicles, utilizing spaceframe construction with dent-resistant polymer panels. Sales reached a peak in 1994, but the brand faced challenges due to its ambitious nature and cannibalization of existing GM sales. Over time, Saturn increasingly relied on shared GM products to control costs, leading to a gradual erosion of its unique identity. In 2009, an attempt to sell the brand failed, and Saturn ceased operations in October 2009, with dealerships closing by October 31, 2010. Leadership positions included Joseph J. Sanchez, William E. Hoglund, Richard “Skip” LeFauve, and others. Saturn’s models included the S-Series (1991–2002), featuring three generations of sedans with varying engine power and exterior designs. The Vue, Outlook, Aura, and Sky were the last models produced before Saturn’s termination.
