Company overview

Scania AB (SKAN-ee-ə, Swedish: [ˈskɑ̌ːnɪa]), stylised SCANIA, is a Swedish manufacturer of heavy trucks, buses and engines. The company began as a merger between Vabis and Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania in 1911. Initially focused on bicycle and automobile production, the company shifted its focus to trucks in 1919 after struggling in the market. Throughout the early and mid-20th century, Scania expanded its operations internationally, establishing manufacturing plants in Brazil, Argentina, Denmark and the Netherlands. In 1968, the company rebranded as simply Scania, discontinuing the Vabis name. In 1969, it merged with Saab AB to form Saab-Scania AB, which later separated in 1995. The Volkswagen Group acquired a majority stake in Scania in 2008, and by 2015, the group held full ownership. In September 2017, Scania was fined for participating in a European price-fixing cartel. As of 2025, Scania operated in over 100 countries and delivered 94,073 vehicles worldwide. In 2025, Scania published its first Sustainability Statement aligned with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards.
