Company overview

Singer Motors Limited began as a British bicycle manufacturer in Coventry, England, founded in 1874 by George Singer. Initially focused on producing safer bicycles than the standard Penny-Farthing, Singer expanded into motor vehicle production in 1901 with the Tri-Voiturette, a three-wheeled car. The company developed and manufactured various motor vehicles, including motorcycles with unique engine designs like the Perks & Birch motorwheel. Early cars utilized engines from Aster and White & Poppe, eventually transitioning to their own power plants. By 1928, Singer was Britain’s third largest car manufacturer. The company introduced models such as the Ten and Senior, with innovations like Fluidrive transmission and independent front suspension. Racing success with the Nine model highlighted Singer’s capabilities, though a disastrous appearance at Le Mans in 1935 damaged its racing reputation. Production ceased during World War I and resumed afterward, with a focus on maintaining engine technology until 1932. The company’s final model, the Eleven, featured innovative features like Fluidrive and Airstream coachwork. Singer’s decline was marked by increasing competition from other British manufacturers.
