Company overview

SsangYong Motor Company, now operating as KG Mobility, began as Dong-A Motor in 1954. The company initially produced jeeps for the US Army and trucks before transitioning to automobile assembly under various ownerships. In 1986, it was acquired by the SsangYong Group and renamed SsangYong Motor Company. Subsequent ownership included Daewoo Motors, SAIC Motor, and Mahindra & Mahindra. In 2023, KG Group acquired the company, rebranding it as KG Mobility. The company’s primary focus has been on sport utility vehicles and crossovers, with a recent shift towards electric vehicle development. Throughout its history, SsangYong has utilized technology partnerships, most notably with Daimler-Benz, to develop SUV models. The company faced significant challenges including receivership in 2009 and a failed acquisition by Edison Motors. In June 2023, KG Group completed its acquisition, and the company is currently planning to expand into new markets, including Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, and the Middle East. KG Mobility is currently establishing sales operations in Germany and has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Chery Automobile.
