Company overview

The Standard Motor Company Limited was founded in Coventry, England, in 1903 by Reginald Walter Maudslay. Initially focused on marine internal combustion engines, the company transitioned to motor vehicle manufacturing in 1903. Standard produced a range of vehicles, including tractors (Ferguson TE20) and automobiles, from 1903 until 1963 in Britain and 1988 in India. In 1945, Standard acquired Triumph Motor Company, and the name ‘Standard’ was officially used on all products from 1959. The company shifted its focus to aircraft production during World War II, manufacturing over 1,000 planes and various components for the British war effort. Following the war, Standard resumed car production with the 1948 introduction of the Standard Vanguard, a post-war design influenced by American styling. In 1946, Standard began manufacturing Harry Ferguson tractors in partnership with Ferguson.
