Company overview

Stoewer was a German automobile manufacturer founded in 1858. Initially, the company produced sewing machines and typewriters before transitioning to automobile production in 1899. The Stoewer brothers, Emil and Bernhard, established Gebrüder Stoewer, Fabrik für Motorfahrzeuge. Their first car, the Großer Stoewer Motorwagen, was produced in 1900. The company expanded its factory and increased production significantly by 1906. In 1908, Stoewer partnered with Deutsche Motorfahrzeugfabrik GmbH to produce the Autognom. From 1908 to 1916, Stoewer operated as a limited company, Stoewer-Werke AG. During the 1920s, they introduced new car models including the D-types with various engine configurations. In 1936, Stoewer developed a four-wheel drive vehicle for the German army. Production of several models was halted due to economic conditions in the early 1930s. The company ceased operations after World War II, with its facilities seized by the Red Army and equipment sent to the Soviet Union.
