Company overview

Sunbeam Motor Car Company Limited was established in 1901 as a British automobile manufacturer. John Marston initiated the company’s operations in 1888 with his pedal-cycle business, later transitioning to motorcar production. The company initially focused on manufacturing motorcycles before shifting its attention to automobiles in 1905, separating itself from Marston’s existing cycle business. Sunbeam produced aircraft engines during World War I, contributing to both military and civilian aviation efforts. Louis Coatalen joined Sunbeam in 1909, significantly reorganizing production and introducing innovative designs such as the shaft-driven rear axle. By 1934, declining sales led to financial difficulties and a receivership, culminating in its acquisition by the Rootes brothers. Sunbeam continued as a marque name on vehicles produced by other companies, including Chrysler and Talbot, until 1976. During its peak in the 1920s, Sunbeam’s Moorfield works employed 3,500 staff and covered a substantial area. Cars manufactured before the end of World War I are classified as vintage, while those built after qualify as post-vintage.
