Company overview

Vagnfabriks Aktiebolaget i Södertelge, known as Vabis, was established in 1891 in Södertälje, Sweden. It began as a railway car manufacturer serving the Swedish State Railways and other operators. The company also produced petrol engines, automobiles, trucks, motorboats, and marine engines. In 1902, Vabis built its first truck. By 1908, a 3-ton truck with a 20-horsepower engine won an international competition. The company registered the trademark ‘Vabis’ in 1906. In 1910, it merged with Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania. The combined entity became Scania-Vabis, later Scania AB. Production of engines and light automobiles continued at the Södertälje location, while trucks were manufactured in Malmö. Headquarters moved to Södertälje in 1912.
