Company overview
American Motors Corporation (AMC) was formed in 1954 through the merger of Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson Motor Car Company. This created the fourth-largest automotive company in the United States at the time, with assets of US$355 million. Initially, AMC competed with automakers like Studebaker, Packard, Kaiser Motors, and the Big Three (Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler). The company produced a range of vehicles including small cars like the Rambler American, Hornet, Gremlin, and Pacer, as well as intermediate and full-sized models such as the Ambassador, Rebel, and Matador. Early in its history, AMC pioneered four-wheel drive vehicles with the Jeep Wagoneer and Eagle. In 1959, George W. Romney focused on the compact Rambler line due to market trends and competition from larger manufacturers, successfully transforming AMC into a profitable company. Throughout the 1960s, American Motors was known for its innovative features, such as tandem master cylinders and adjustable front seats, often ahead of the “Big Three.” The company’s success was built on a strategy of producing reliable, economical cars and utilizing shared components. In 1979, Renault acquired a significant interest in AMC, and the company was ultimately acquired by Chrysler in 1987.
