Company overview

The Rambler automobile brand began in 1897 with Thomas B. Jeffery, a bicycle manufacturer, who initially used the name for his prototype automobiles. Charles W. Nash acquired Jeffery in 1916 and reintroduced the Rambler name to the market in 1950, under the Nash-Kelvinator Corporation. The brand continued through the 1969 model year in the United States and 1983 internationally. Initially produced as a small, economical car, the Rambler gained popularity in 1958 and became a key part of American Motors Corporation (AMC). During the early 1960s, George W. Mason focused on producing affordable compact cars to compete with offerings from General Motors and Ford. The Rambler line was discontinued in the United States in 1969, but continued to be produced under various names – including Rambler American and Ambassador – in international markets until 1983. The final U.S.-built Rambler, with over 4.2 million vehicles bearing the nameplate, rolled off the assembly line in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on June 30, 1969. The brand was then continued in various international markets by companies such as Vehículos Automotores Mexicanos (Mexico) and Purdy Mot.
