Company overview
Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer specializing in luxury vehicles. Its origins trace back to the early 20th century with companies including Horch, DKW, and Wanderer. These entities formed Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi brand began in the 1960s when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union, relaunching it with the 1965 introduction of the Audi F103 series. The four rings in the Audi logo represent the original four companies that created Auto Union. In 1969, Auto Union merged with NSU Motorenwerke. Following World War II, the company relocated to Ingolstadt, Bavaria, and began production as a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group. During the war, Audi collaborated with Nazi Germany on labor camp construction and forced labor at factories. After reunification, the Zwickau plant, formerly an Audi factory, produced the Trabant until 1991. In 2021, production of the Audi Q4 e-tron resumed at Zwickau. The company was acquired by Volkswagen in 1966, and the Audi brand was revived with the launch of the Audi 100 in 1968, followed by the Audi 80/Fox in 1972. Today, Audi is among the world’s leading luxury automobile brands.
