Company overview

Lamborghini (officially Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.) is an Italian manufacturer of luxury sports cars and SUVs based in Sant'Agata Bolognese. The company was founded in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini with the objective of producing a refined grand touring car to compete with Ferrari. Early models, such as the 350 GT, were released in the mid-1960s. Lamborghini was noted for using a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout and the 1966 Miura sports coupé. The company experienced significant sales declines in the wake of the 1973 worldwide financial downturn and oil crisis. Ownership changed several times, including a bankruptcy in 1978, followed by acquisition by Chrysler Corporation in 1987 and subsequently by the Volkswagen Group in 1998, where it is now managed under Audi. As of 2025, Lamborghini produces the twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid Temerario, the Urus SUV powered by a twin-turbo V8 engine, and the Revuelto, a V12/electric hybrid. The company also produces V12 engines for offshore powerboat racing. Lamborghini Trattori, founded in 1948, remains a separate entity producing tractors. The company’s motorsport division, Squadra Corse, develops GT3 and Super Trofeo cars based on models such as the Gallardo and Huracán. Lamborghini has been an engine supplier in Formula One from 1989 to 1993, providing engines to teams like Larrousse and Lotus. Racing versions of the Diablo were produced for the Supertrophy series from 1996 to 1999, and a Murciélago R-GT was developed for the FIA GT Championship.
