Company overview

The Autocar Company began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1897 as a manufacturer of early automobiles and trucks. It transitioned to producing severe-duty vocational trucks in 1899, becoming the oldest surviving motor vehicle brand in the Western Hemisphere. In 1953, White Motor Corporation acquired Autocar, and later, in 1981, Volvo Trucks purchased White. Autocar was then acquired by GVW Group in 2001, leading to its revival as an independent company. Autocar currently manufactures four models of custom-engineered heavy-duty trucks, including the ACDM medium/heavy-duty cabover and ACTT terminal tractor. The company’s history includes the production of numerous models, such as the Type XVIII and DC series, with a focus on conventional trucks. During World War II, Autocar supplied 50,000 military vehicles. In 2017, Autocar opened a new manufacturing facility in Birmingham, Alabama. Current models include the DC-64R for refuse applications and a range of trucks designed for specific vocational needs, such as concrete mixers and dump trucks.
