Borgward was a German car manufacturing company founded in 1905 by Carl F. W. Borgward. It operated under several brands – Borgward, Hansa, Goliath and Lloyd – producing vehicles for a diverse international market. The company’s most successful model was the Borgward Isabella, introduced in 1954. In 1961, due to financial difficulties and a complex corporate structure, the company ceased operations. Following a hiatus, Borgward was revived in the 21st century by the Stuttgart-based Borgward Group AG, which contracted Chinese manufacturers to produce vehicles. In 1963, Carl Borgward died while the company was undergoing insolvency proceedings. Later, in 1967, manufacturing equipment for Borgward vehicles was sold to Mexico and Argentina. A revival occurred in 2008, with the formation of Borgward Group AG and subsequent production of SUVs by Beiqi Foton Motor in China. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2022.
