Company overview
Aiways Automobiles Company Ltd was founded in 2017 by Chinese entrepreneurs, Fu Qian and Gu Feng. The company initially aimed to develop a range of electric SUVs for both domestic Chinese markets and Europe. In 2019, the U5 model was launched in China, followed by European sales beginning in 2020. Aiways introduced its second model, the U6, in 2021, designed with an avant-garde style. In mid-2023, the company faced significant financial difficulties leading to production halts and employee salary reductions. A restructuring effort was initiated in August 2023, with the company receiving financial support from Thai e-mobility service provider Phoenix EV and Chinese state authorities in March 2024. Aiways plans to exit the Chinese market and focus on European sales, with a public listing on Nasdaq planned for late 2024. Gumpert Aiways Automobile, a subsidiary of German engineer Roland Gumpert, collaborated on the RG Nathalie hybrid coupe in 2021 before the project was discontinued. Aiways utilizes a Global headquarters in Shanghai, China and European headquarters and R&D center in Munich, Germany. The Shangrao production base employs advanced automation technology, including robots from Kuka and ABB.
