Company overview

Hawtai Motor Group was founded in 2000 and, as of May 2011, was owned by Zhang Xiugen. The company initially produced SUVs and began a joint venture with Hyundai Motors in 2002. This partnership manufactured Hyundai-brand passenger cars for the Chinese market, utilizing some Hyundai technology until 2029. Hawtai produced sedans starting in 2010 and utilized engine technologies developed by companies like VM Motori. Production facilities were located in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, and Rongcheng, Shandong, with a combined annual capacity of 350,000 units in 2010. Hawtai sold versions of Hyundai models such as the Matrix, Santa Fe, and Terracan in China. In 2013, Hawtai sold 28,812 passenger cars in China. The company exported to Angola, Southeast Asia, and some countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
