Company overview

Indian Motorcycle is an American motorcycle brand currently controlled by the Los Angeles-based private equity firm Carolwood LP. The company originated as Hendee Manufacturing Company in Springfield, Massachusetts, between 1901 and 1953. Initially producing bicycles, the company developed its first motorcycle in 1901 and quickly gained prominence. By the 1910s, Hendee Manufacturing became the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, producing models like the Scout (1920-1946) and the Chief (1922-1953). In 2011, Polaris Industries acquired the Indian brand and integrated its operations into facilities in Minnesota and Iowa. In 2025, Carolwood LP acquired a majority stake, marking a new chapter in the company’s history. Early models utilized engines built by Aurora, and later, Indian began manufacturing its own engines. The company achieved significant racing success in the early 20th century, including a first, second, and third place finish at the Isle of Man TT in 1911. The Scout and Chief became highly successful models during the inter-war years, with Indian competing closely with Harley-Davidson for market share. During World War II, Indian motorcycles were supplied to the US military and other Commonwealth forces through Lend-Lease programs. The company continued to innovate, introducing models like the 1936-37 Indian Four with its unique EOI cylinder head and later, the 841 for desert warfare.
