Company overview
Jeep is an American automobile brand currently owned by Stellantis. Initially established as a military vehicle during World War II, it evolved into a line of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) following its acquisition by American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987. The first Jeep, the BRC reconnaissance car, was developed in response to a U.S. Army need for a four-wheel drive vehicle during the war, with Willys-Overland ultimately producing 640,000 Jeeps for the war effort. The term ‘jeep’ originated as U.S. Army slang for new recruits and vehicles, later becoming associated with the wartime 4x4 vehicle. Production of civilian Jeeps began in 1945 at the Willys-Overland plant in Toledo, Ohio. The Jeep Wrangler series has remained in production since 1986 and is known for its solid axles and open-top design. Jeep vehicles have been imitated globally, including in the Philippines where they are adapted into jeepneys and owner-type jeeps. Today, Jeep offers a range of SUVs including the Wrangler, Gladiator, Scrambler, Compass, Cherokee, Recon, Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer.
