Company overview

The Locomobile Company of America was founded in 1899 and produced automobiles for approximately three decades. Initially, the company manufactured steam-powered vehicles, known for their early adoption of this technology and a limited number of body styles. In 1903, production shifted to internal combustion engines, focusing on luxury automobiles. Locomobile was acquired by Durant Motors in 1922 and ceased operations in 1929. During its production years, Locomobile produced a range of models including the Model 48, known for its quality and pricing relative to contemporary vehicles. The company also experimented with racing, achieving a notable victory at the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup. Locomobiles appeared in various fictional works, including F. Scott Fitzgerald's *This Side of Paradise* and Thomas Savage’s *The Power of the Dog*, reflecting their status as symbols of wealth and prestige during the early 20th century.
