Company overview

Meteor was a Canadian automobile brand produced by Ford Motor Company of Canada from 1949 to 1961 and again from 1964 to 1976. Initially, it was introduced to complement the Mercury line and provide a low-priced option for Canadian dealers against Pontiac. From 1949 to 1959, Meteor consistently ranked fourth in sales volume. The brand was discontinued in 1962 and 1963, but returned in 1964 as a standalone make based on the full-size Mercury. During its production, Meteor utilized Ford body designs with unique styling elements such as grilles and taillights. Model names varied over time, including De Luxe, Custom, Mainline, Customline, Niagara, Rideau, and Ranchero. Production numbers totaled approximately 378,463 units between 1949 and 1961, and approximately 255,000 units between 1964 and 1976. In the later years, Meteor was rebranded as a lower-priced variant of the Mercury Marquis.
