Company overview
Peugeot is a French automobile brand, currently owned by Stellantis. Founded in 1810 as a family business involved in steel manufacturing and later bicycle production, the company began automobile manufacture in 1896. Armand Peugeot developed the first Peugeot car, a steam-powered tricycle, and established Société des Automobiles Peugeot in 1896. Early racing success included the Paris–Rouen race in 1903 and the Indianapolis 500 in 1913, 1916, and 1919. During World War I, Peugeot shifted production to arms manufacturing, including aircraft engines and armored vehicles. Following the war, the company continued racing success with innovations like ballbearing crankshafts and four-wheel brakes. In 1926, the cycle and motor business was separated to form Cycles Peugeot. The company introduced the 201 in 1929, featuring a three-digit naming system. During World War II, Peugeot aided the Nazi war effort while also supporting the French Resistance through industrial sabotage. Post-war, production resumed with the 202 and 203 models, establishing new sales records. The company acquired Chenard-Walcker in 1950 and Automobiles Hotchkiss in 1942, further expanding its operations.
