Company overview

The Riga Autobus Factory (RAF) was established in Riga, Latvia, during the Soviet period as a primary producer of vans and minibuses for the USSR. Initially operating from a Riga auto repair factory in 1949, it was renamed the Riga Experimental Bus Factory and became a key Soviet manufacturer of minibuses like the RAF-977. In 1969, production moved to Jelgava, where the RAF-2203 Latvija was produced for widespread use within the Soviet Union and exported to various Socialist bloc nations. The factory faced challenges including labor shortages, quality control issues, and infrastructural strain during its Soviet era. After the collapse of the USSR, production declined significantly due to disrupted supply chains and competition from foreign manufacturers. A new attempt at revival in 2018 ultimately failed, with the company dissolving in 2022. Surviving prototypes and production models are now displayed at museums, representing the factory’s history of vehicle design and manufacturing.
