Company overview

Reliant Motor Company began as a small, three-wheeled vehicle manufacturer in Tamworth, England, founded in 1935. Initially producing vehicles based on Raleigh bicycle designs, Reliant quickly expanded its product line to include sports cars and commercial vehicles. The company pioneered the use of fibreglass body construction, becoming a European leader in this technology by the 1970s. Reliant became the second-largest British-owned car manufacturer in the 1970s, producing vehicles for export to nine countries. The company developed a range of vehicles through licensing agreements with other manufacturers, including the Anadol in Turkey and the Sabre in Israel. In 1969, Reliant acquired Bond Cars to expand its market share. Reliant focused on a niche market of three-wheeled vehicles, primarily targeting motorcyclists. After a period of ownership changes and restructuring, including the acquisition of Hodge Group and later Nash family ownership, Reliant transitioned to importing Ligier microcars and Piaggio Ape three-wheelers in 1997, ending car production in 2001. The final Reliant vehicle produced was the Robin.
