Company overview

The Tucker Corporation was established in 1947 by Preston Tucker, aiming to introduce a revolutionary automobile design. The company’s primary product, the Tucker 48, was conceived in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and initially produced in Chicago. The 48 featured innovative engineering, including a rear-engine configuration, disc brakes, and independent suspension. Development involved several designers, starting with George S. Lawson and later Alex Tremulis, who collaborated on the car’s styling. The Tucker 48 was notable for its third directional headlamp and a crash chamber designed to protect occupants in collisions. Despite the car’s advanced features, production was limited to 51 vehicles due to a series of setbacks. Initial problems with the prototype, including mechanical failures and engine issues, were compounded by negative publicity stemming from a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into alleged stock fraud. The SEC ultimately acquitted Tucker, but the company’s reputation was severely damaged. Tucker explored alternative engine options, including a modified Franklin aircraft engine, and adapted a Cord transmission to accommodate the rear-engine design. The company’s resources were significantly impacted by its acquisition of Air Cooled Motors, which ended existing aviation engine contracts.
