Company overview
GAC Trumpchi is an automotive brand established in 2010 by GAC Group. Initially, the brand was used solely within China under the name Trumpchi. Vehicles were marketed internationally as GAC Motor to avoid potential confusion with US President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization. The name ‘Trumpchi’ is derived from the Chinese term ‘chuánqí,’ meaning “spreading good fortune,” which has a phonetic resemblance to the word ‘legendary.’ The company began producing Trumpchi vehicles in 2010 with the GA5 sedan, based on the Alfa Romeo 166 platform. Subsequent models included the GS5 SUV (2012), GA3 and GA3S sedans, and the GA4 sedan. In 2017, GAC planned to introduce Trumpchi vehicles in the United States market as GAC Motor, starting with the GS8 SUV. These plans were ultimately cancelled due to trade restrictions and tariffs.
