Uniti Motors, originally Uniti Sweden, was founded in January 2016 by students and engineers in Lund, Sweden. The company aimed to develop an electric microcar with digital features. It began as an open innovation project at Lund University and raised capital through crowdfunding, angel investors, and institutional investment. Over 3000 investors from 40 countries participated in crowdfunding campaigns. The company conducted pre-order campaigns at Media Markt locations in Stockholm and Malmö, offering VR test drives. In early 2022, Uniti Sweden AB entered bankruptcy proceedings due to financial instability and a lack of long-term capital. The District Court of Lund formally declared the company bankrupt in March 2022, appointing a receiver. Following the bankruptcy, assets including prototypes and technical documentation were offered for tender. An earlier investor acquired Uniti’s intellectual property, design materials, and technical documentation in 2022. Paul Birch was appointed CEO, and Jonas Pinzke joined as Chief Marketing Officer. Marcelo Aguiar continued in his role as Head of Design. The company emphasized clearer execution and a focused product roadmap.
