Company overview
Maserati S.p.A., established in 1914 in Bologna, Italy, is a manufacturer of luxury cars. The company’s headquarters are now located in Modena. Initially focused on racing, Maserati began with the brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto. These brothers built race cars for Diatto before founding the Maserati marque in 1926, initially producing vehicles with four, six, eight, and sixteen cylinders. The Trident logo was designed by Mario Maserati in 1920, referencing Neptune and Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore. In 1937, the Maserati brothers sold their shares to the Orsi family, who moved the company headquarters to Modena. Following World War II, Maserati returned to car production and employed engineers like Alberto Massimino, Giulio Alfieri, Vittorio Bellentani, and Gioacchino Colombo. The company’s first road-going grand tourer, the 3500 GT, was introduced in 1957. Citroën acquired Maserati in 1968, and a joint venture was formed to produce an engine for the SM. The Biturbo, introduced in 1980, became a successful model with its twin-turbocharged V6 engine. In 1975, Alejandro de Tomaso acquired Maserati. As of 2021, Stellantis owns the company.
